How to Order Custom Gift Cards

Gift cards are everyone's favorite gift! Gift card recipients love that they can pick out exactly what they want while business owners love the immediate revenue that is generated each time a gift card is sold. Ordering custom plastic gift cards for your small business may seem like a daunting task but Print Robot is here to help!
Gift Card Quantity

Step 1: Gift Card Quantity

Choose from 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,500, 5,000, or contact us for higher quantities. 


Although 100 is the minimum quantity to purchase custom printed gift cards, consider a quantity of 500 or 1,000+ for the best value since the cost per card goes down significantly.

Imprint Options

Step 2: Imprint Options

Most gift cards are printed with full color on the front and black ink on the back. Sometimes they are ordered with full color on both sides and occasisionally, printing is only needed on the front of the card. Each of these printing options affect gift card pricing.
Gift Card Upgrades

Step 3: Gift Card Upgrades

If your custom gift cards will be used as a voucher that simply gets turned in like a coupon, optional upgrades may not be required but if they will integrate with your POS system or you need a way to track the value of the cards, you will likely need one or more of the upgrades below:
Magnetic Stripe

Magnetic stripes are available in LoCo and HiCo. Unless the mag stripe is just for show or you have the ability to encode them yourself, you will want to order your gift cards with encoding on track 1, 2, or 3. The cards get encoded with a number sequence in order to function properly with your POS system. If you aren't sure which settings are compatible with your POS, contact Print Robot and we are happy to assist you. Numbering

If you will be selecting a gift card with a magnetic stripe, it is customary for the same number sequence that gets encoded on the cards to get printed on them as well. If you have a simpler setup and don't require a mag stripe but do want each card to have a unique number, we can do that as well. These can be sequential numbers (001, 002, 003, etc.) or you can provide a data file with unique numbering to get printed on your gift cards.

Barcode or QR Code

Instead of a magnetic stripe, some companies prefer a barcode or QR code. Barcodes are available in a variety of formats including Code 128 and Code 39. QR codes can simply link to your website or social media profile, or each card can contain a unique QR code to manage the value of the gift card. Refer to your POS company for the settings required to make these compatible with your system or contact Print Robot for assistance.

Card Finish

Plastic gift cards come standard with a gloss finish. Prefer a more upscale look? Upgrade to matte finish.

Paper Gift Cards or Plastic Gift Cards

Step 4: Paper or Plastic Gift Cards?

Most custom gift cards are printed on PVC plastic that is the same thickness as a credit card. There is a new trend in gift cards that are produced on engineered paper. PaprCard paper gift cards offer a more eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic cards and can be produced with the same optional upgrades including magnetic stripes.

Our plastic gift cards are 30 mil thick (like a standard credit card) and made from PVC plastic. Our paper gift cards are contructed from 28 pt engineered paper from FSC® certified sources.
Our gift cards are compatible with 99% of the POS systems on the market. We just need to determine the specific settings required by your POS system by determing if it uses a magnetic stripe, barcode, or QR code. If it uses a magnetic stripe, we need to know if it is LoCo or HiCo, if it gets encoded on track 1, 2, or 3, and if there are any requirements for the number sequence. If it uses a barcode, we just need to know the barcode type, how many digits are needed, and if there any special requirements for the starting number. If it uses a QR code, we'll just need the URL or numbering format required. Print Robot is happy to reach out to your POS provider to help get these answers for you. We can also send you a blank test before your order is printed to ensure that they work with your POS.
